What’s cool about Twitter!

…so I am on Twitter a few days ago…I search PolarisPrize.

I see a bunch of post including this one so I RT (re tweet).

…then I check out the link.

a new favorite Blog, not only is there good info, Amanda is also a Great Lake Swimmers Fan. I’ll check back for sure.

So I go about my day..and receive a text message from my Sister in Ottawa reminding me about the Basia Bulat show in Van last nite so I go, its great, she’s a blast.  CUT TO: this morning, reading the newspaper, I mean checking out Tweetdeck and……

…..Amanda captures the best part of the show in this posted  vid… I check it out, cool BUT the post underneath ‘My latest Obsession’…well if you have ever seen DJ Champion live…you’ll know why its exciting!!!!!

here is a pic I took at one one his shows on my Palm cellphone……for me it captured the essence of a Champion show, so much I blew it up 4′ x4′.  It still inspires me.

So thanks, as KK puts it “Internets” and thx Amanda! That’s whats cool about Twitter.

Finally, a little gem from me to you…Basia, singing with The Great Lake Swimmers at the Vancouver Folk Fest, summer 2009

‘With Glowing Hearts’…we see thee rise

WGH-is a story about a revolution, one of social change and a paradigm shift in media representation. Vancouver sets the stage, against the backdrop of the 2010 Winter Games, for our documentary about a marginalized community embracing social media tools to empower, inspire and breakdown the digital divide. This is a project that I am directing and is being produced by animalmotherfilms.com. Shot on various capture devices including the Red, the HVX 200, the 5D MkII and the Nokia N77 cellphone. We began shooting Feb/2009 and will continue through March/2010….look for more footage to appear…soon. Enjoy.

Jesus de Montreal

What better post than a little tribute and thx to my favorite filmmaker Denys Arcand. Bonne St. Jean!!

I like Denys work, especialy the collective characters and the human spirit behind his stories.  Never having met him, I once read that he quit making movies for a year because he was tired of the politics in the biz.  He played hockey during that time to cleanse his disillusionment.  Pretty cool I thought….and what else is cool?…I recently won the ‘Exposed! CELEBRITY CAMERA AUCTION‘-a fundraiser for DOXA Documentary Film Festival of Denys Arcand’s single-use camera and the unique set of undeveloped snapshots!!!!  Titled ‘Springtime in Montreal’

Here are a couple of pics from the disposable 35 mm Minolta with 800 ASA Konica film developed and transfered to low res jpegs…Enjoy, I sure am!  Merci Denys!

Hockey, Love It!!

There are many reasons to love this game.  Here is one of mine.  For $2:50 an hr. my 1st job was as at an outdoor rink.  I was 13.  What excitement!! I got to play hockey all day, all nite.  When the fun was over we would flood the ice with an old rubber fire hose, often it was minus 25 degrees Celsius.  At this temperature water shoots from the end of the hose and hits the ice with a tonne of momentum and freezes on contact!  Steam everywhere!  It was magical the ‘cold smoke’, backlit brilliantly by the floodlights, vanishing into the night, leaving behind a fresh new sheet of ice!  What possibilities, not just in hockey.
And so the playoffs are here, a new beginning, what stories might unfold??  Here is a video, done a few years ago.  A highlight package from the book ‘Hockey and High Heels’ that my friend Lisa Ovens wrote.  Another great story and reason to love hockey.  I took a number of digital stills and used graphic’s from Lisa’s book.  My friend Martin Halle then created the animations and we cut the vid. A POOF is a PlayOff Only Fan and yes Lisa has a suggestion for the parade route.

Coffee Break

it’s been a very long coffee break but before we get to the RED…enjoy this.  It was shot on the Sanyo Xacti HD Camera.  Neat little device with easy workflow.  Still some limitations.  I couldn’t find a way to check manual settings other than playback but I am happy with the results and will use it again.

Haunting Season 2008

Hey Everyone,

Here is one of the project’s from this years Halloween season at Saunders Farm.  So much fun to do and having just completed the edit, extends the season right past all those who feel it necessary to have lights up and start forcing their Christmas music on us far too early!  So to those of you who might want one more Halloween thrill before moving into the next season….Enjoy!  We shot on the Sony XD Cam.  1/2″ chip and full manual controls.  I really enjoyed working with it.  We recorded on the SXS cards and the workflow to FCP was very straight forward.  Next stop the Red.

Shorty’s Pawn Shop

You are about to view a scene I directed @ the 2008 Summer Institute of Film & Television.  Such a great program not only for professional development but for industry networking and new friendships.  Michael Mabbott, he of the ‘Life and Hard Times of Guy Terrifico’ fame lead our class.  Fun and energetic, he not only inspired us he also shared advice and industry secrets.  We crewed each others scenes.  Thanks to everyone and it’s a shame that with funding cut this great program might disappear. ”ovenmitts!”
